Hello Ward Family,

I am so grateful for the opportunity to study the Doctrine and Covenants this year. Already, my testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith has been strengthened through my Come Follow Me study and lessons at church.

Brothers and Sisters, I believe in Brother Joseph. I believe he is the Prophet of the Restoration. I believe he was an imperfect man called to do an extraordinary work—and that he did so with all his heart. The fruits of his labor in my life are real and abundant.

I have heard the “dark choir” of voices that seek to tear down the Prophet Joseph. Their arguments can be persuasive, viewed through the narrow, dark lens of history while filling in the gaps with condemning assumptions, half-truths, and faith-destroying interpretations. But in the end, we will find what we are looking for.

If our desire is to nurture faith, we will seek out sources that strengthen it. If we are looking for reasons to abandon faith, there are more than enough voices dedicated to that cause. Heavenly Father will not force belief upon us—faith is a choice.

Yes, there are challenging aspects of history that we may not fully understand. But as for me, the light and truth I have received because of Brother Joseph’s work far outweigh the questions I have about him and his life.

When I was 17, I had the opportunity to go on a church history tour. I walked in the Sacred Grove. I stood in the very places where Brother Joseph saw angels, taught sermons, lost children, was tarred and feathered, imprisoned, and ultimately, where he gave his life.  I believe he saw what he said he saw.  He did what Jesus needed him to do.  Through his tremendous suffering and sacrifice, we have the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

Thank you, Brother Joseph.
